Baglio Tumbarello

Marsala

Formerly a wine storehouse, Baglio Tumbarello is inside the archaeological area of Marsala, right next to the archaeological museum “Baglio Anselmi”. The project involves setting up a multimedia museum inside Baglio Tumbarello, in order to introduce new information and communication systems for the completion of the existing Archaeological Museum “Baglio Anselmi”, as well as serving the archaeological park itself at the same time.
The museum path develops through four distinct areas: the Chambers of Time, the Archaeological Observatory, the Daytime Rituals and the Night-time Rituals.
The Chambers of Time and the Archaeological Observatory will give an important contribution for both the upgrading and the adjustment of traditional information and fruition systems, favouring more emotional and evocative kinds of systems, but always respecting that historic memory which has layered over the archaeological area.
The first striking didactic experience is represented by the archaeological periscope. It follows the principle of the augmented reality: when interacting with the device, live recorded images will start flowing, coming from special video cameras located on the outside and looking out on the archaeological area of Capo Boeo.
At this point the visitor can choose whether to continue on their path to the Chambers of Time, in which the Daytime Rituals and the Night-time Rituals are celebrated. In any case, when visitors touch or lightly brush the objects from the scenography, visual and emotional paths will be activated, immersing the viewer in the daily life of the city’s inhabitants.
Going down a gravel path the area dedicated to the Daytime Rituals can be reached. The stage is mounted and divided into three sections: political life, religious life and commercial life. The pace of the narration is marked by micro-stories which recall memories now lost.
On the left of the entrance to the museum there is a scenographic installation marked by a sequence of aligned fabric veils and curtains, in which the Night-time rituals are performed. The projections can only be activated by touching those veils: on each one of them will appear shapes in the form of a shadow play, animating the narration with actions connected to the private life of Lilibeo’s inhabitants. To maintain the continuity with the outside, the paving will consist of a light coloured compacted gravel path; in the Night-time rituals area it will be delimited by sand while in the Daytime part it will expand to the point of being confused with the real archaeological finds, the latter evoking some of the actions seen before. A section of the gravel path in the Daytime Rituals area will be surrounded by a paving made of “basole” (basalt stones ), which, with the aid of special sensors, will conjure up the noises made by cart wheels, marching troops and the coming and going of wanderers and merchants.
